Hip dysplasia (HD) is a common developmental orthopedic disorder involving excessive hip joint laxity and malformation that often lead to subluxation of the femoral head and secondary osteoarthritis (OA). Pain associated with HD is usually related to OA.💢
.
Diagnosis of HD can be made early in life, before onset of OA, thereby providing an opportunity to preserve the affected joints (typically via surgery); prevent or delay onset of secondary OA; and remove the animal from the breeding pool. Diagnosis is made by clinical examination and radiograph.🩻
.
If diagnosis is made after OA has developed, salvage surgical procedures and/or early initiation of therapy for OA can provide long term pain relief and maintain mobility/function.
