One of the most common emergency surgery I perform is pyometra surgery. It is a preventable disease by desexing. Any entire female dog/cat are at risk. This is caused by an overwhelming infection in the uterus. The bacteria will then enter the bloodstream and cause sepsis and organ failure.🦠 The clinical signs are excessive discharge from the vagina, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia and lethargy. The severity of the condition can be assess by different diagnostic tests included blood test, x-ray and ultrasound.☠️ In Pic 1, the 2 black circular structures are the fluid filled uterus which are located dorsal to the bladder. Pic 2 shows an intra-op abnormal distended/enlarge/fluid filled uterus. In pic 3, both of these uterus are from similar size patient. The abnormal uterus is much bigger and lumpier than the normal uterus.
